Ten questions in ten minutes with Kelvin Armstrong

Kelvin_ArmstrongKelvin Armstrong is managing director of Kelvin Armstrong Auto Repairs Limited, a finalist in the Corban Revell Best Small Business Award category at the 2010 Westpac Waitakere Business Awards.

Business to Business - What inspired you to start up your business?
Kelvin Armstrong - Whilst working for a group of small workshops around Auckland, relieving for staff absences, finding that I doubled their turnover in several locations in a short time, just through my passion and energy in what I do.

BtoB - Who has influenced you the most professionally?
KA - There is not just one person, I have had the pleasure of working with several business coaches/mentors, but the most influential pathway I have been taught by them has been goal setting.

BtoB - How would you describe yourself as a businessman?
KA - I am passionate about doing it right first time and being the best I possibly can. I recognize we all make mistakes at times, but place importance on learning from them. I have always set goals to improve efficiency and set the benchmark, with my peers. I live my business, I want to be recognized at being the best at what I do, everything revolves around this from procedures to jobs in hand. I recognize I am not going to be successful without the full participation of my team.

BtoB - What do you consider your greatest achievement?
KA - The transition from owner operator to working on my business.

BtoB - With hindsight, what is the one thing you would do differently?
KA - Take the plunge and employ more staff, earlier.

BtoB - Who do you find inspirational and why?
KA - John Key - to have been so successful in business and investment, and then to move into a public role for the benefit of the wider community, being so open to criticism in a public way.
