Ten questions in ten minutes with Jeremy McLean

Jeremy_McleanJeremy McLean is founding director of Snitch Incorporated Ltd, a GPS Vehicle Tracking Technology company and a finalist in a few categories at the 2010 Westpac Waitakere Business Awards, including the Young Business Person of the Year Award.

Business to Business - What inspired you to start up your business?
Jeremy McLean - A passion for product design, especially with GPS products. Wanting to improve the quality, service and affordability to a market in its infancy with a lot of room to grow and succeed.

BtoB - Who has influenced you the most professionally?
JM - A number of people, including ex bosses and workmates. Since being in business for myself I have been able to observe other successful business owners and adopted the good, and avoided the bad from their styles and experience. There would be no “one person” but an amalgamation of about 10 different people's lessons and advice.

BtoB - How would you describe yourself as business person?
JM - I would describe myself as relaxed. I always have time for our team and customers, and try to make everyone feel valued. Being in a company and role I love always helps me enjoy every day, which I am sure reflects in my management style.

BtoB - What do you consider your greatest achievement?
JM - My greatest achievement to date would be my selection of the team at Snitch. I have been involved in the recruitment of most of the people at Snitch Inc, and we have a very strong team of people, who all enjoy their jobs. A company is only as good as the people who work there.

BtoB - With hindsight, what is the one thing you would do differently?
JM – I’m extremely happy with everything to date. The timing and way we have achieved our success has been almost magical, so there would not be much I would change.

BtoB - Who do you find inspirational and why?
JM - Anybody who has succeeded in business, and also in life. I haven’t found inspiration in any one person, but hearing about Kiwis who succeed is what has kept me going.

BtoB - What is the most inspirational book you have read recently?
JM - I have never been big on reading, I have mostly read technical books where I can acquire new skills in product development or business techniques. I tend to read magazines which report on business or anything we advertise in.

BtoB - What is your favourite website and why?
JM - Facebook….I think it’s amazing that one website has influenced so many facets of our lives. It's changed the way we keep in touch with old friends and meet new friends. It's changed the way businesses market products and services.

BtoB - What is the first thing you would do if you became Prime Minister?
JM - Ring my mum and tell her, then update my Facebook status. If I did become PM I would change the way Government thinks, making it more like running a company and concentrate on employment, and exports. I see these as the two most important factors in maintaining a sustainable country.

BtoB - What is the best thing about being in business in Waitakere City?
JM - The fact that it’s my home turf makes it very satisfying. Being born and schooled in West Auckland, it gives me a sense of loyalty and belonging in knowing I am giving something back.
