Ten questions in ten minutes with Amanda Wheeler

Ten questions in ten minutes with Amanda Wheeler Amanda Wheeler is programme director at the Foundation for Youth Development Waitakere, finalists in Ritchies Transport Young Business Person of the Year Award and Unitec Community & Volunteer Sector Best Practice Award.

Business to Business - What inspired you to work for FYD?
Amanda Wheeler - To make a real difference in the lives of ‘Westie’ kids. FYD programmes offer an incredible opportunity for change in teenagers’ lives; I am honored to be a part of that process.

BtoB - Who has influenced you the most professionally?
AW - My mentor Mr. John Groom. I have worked with John for several years now; as he has a very similar background to mine, plus he is a successful businessman, mentor and life coach.  He has guided me professionally through many challenging situations. He has encouraged me to grow and learn through our mentoring sessions plus also helped me improve my work/life balance – just to name a few things!

BtoB - How would you describe yourself as businesswomen?
AW - Confident, professional, resilient, solutions focused and highly motivated. I love a challenge and thrive having a role that has many key areas of responsibility.  There is never a dull moment being the Director of FYD Waitakere!

BtoB - What do you consider your greatest achievement?
AW - The growth FYD Waitakere has had since 2004 when the trust was formed. In our first year of operation we ran programmes for 12 teenagers. In 2010 we will work with nearly 500!

BtoB - With hindsight, what is the one thing you would do differently?
AW - I would have focused more on our financial sustainability from the beginning, not just in the last 3 years. Financial sustainability is the key to the success of any organisation and it is now one of the top priorities for the trust as well as running programmes at best practice level of course!

Tickets are now on sale for the 2010 Westpac Waitakere Business Awards Gala Dinner.  Book your places today!
