Gaining Real World Experience

Professional_Bar_and_Restaurant_SchoolEstablished in 1993, The Professional Bar & Restaurant School (PBRS) is widely regarded as New Zealand's leading hospitality management institute with campuses located in Auckland & Wellington.

The last few months has seen considerable growth for the school, for not only the PBRS team, but for our much valued students.  Through their close relationships with the hospitality industry, and other education providers, a number of great opportunities have arisen, such as the Beam Global (BG) Scholarship. The scholarship enables one PBRS student intending to “staircase” from the National Certificate to the PBRS Diploma in Hospitality Management valuable assistance towards their study, and offers not only a monetary award towards their fees, plus BG bar equipment, but they also gain the opportunity to travel the country with Beam Global’s National Ambassador for a week, all expenses paid.   This is a superb opportunity for the winning student to gain an invaluable insight into the hospitality industry, plus it is a fantastic point of difference on their CV.  “I really wanted to step up to studying a diploma after completing my certificate, but was worried about more cost.  The Beam Global Scholarship was the main reason why I decided to up-skill further” said PBRS student Patrick Prendergast.

Another initiative which PBRS is proud to announce is a brand new accreditation agreement with AUT University allowing their graduated diploma students the opportunity to get their qualification cross-credited towards a Bachelor in Hospitality Management.  “I came to New Zealand to get much valued qualifications in hospitality, and now I can even go to degree level when I finish my diploma” said international student Teddy Chen.  This initiative also enables stair casing students the opportunity to automatically gain nearly the first full year out of a three year degree programme from another internationally renowned education provider.

Of course PBRS values the opportunity for their students to gain further valuable experience through their relationship with members of the Waitakere Enterprise After 5 Club.  Such opportunities enable them to gain “Real World Experience” (RWE).  By providing RWE, PBRS can prepare the students for “real life” experiences within industry, so when they complete their studies, and if they aren’t already working, they can have the built up confidence to apply for jobs and have the skills to meet hospitality operators’ expectations when the students begin their new careers.  “Through our relationship with PBRS, we have been able to utilise their students when required to help at busy periods, plus test our management surrounding their training skills, to make sure we are providing quality services and facilities to our customers” said Vicci Pearce, HR manager for IBA.

If you would like to utilise PBRS students for an event or function, please don’t hesitate to contact Employment Coordinator, Fiona Sewell, on 0800 22 78 36 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

“Thank you to those who have already seen and supported us.  It is very much appreciated.” Hamish Small, PBRS General Manager.
