Big players in red meat sector plan

Big players in red meat sector plan Three of New Zealand's largest agricultural players are expected to announce today a big project partly Government funded in the production, marketing and export of red meat.

Silver Fern Farms, PGG Wrightsons and Landcorp are hosting a briefing today billed as a major announcement for the red meat sector. State-owned Landcorp is the country's largest farmer with 116 farms and 1.5 million stock units, Silver Fern Farms is the largest meat processor and exporter with $1.8 billion of sales a year, and PGGW the largest rural services firm.

Silver Fern Farms and PGGW announced in April that they were applying for funding from the Government's new Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) to advance a plan to design a "transformational model for the New Zealand red meat sector".

They said at the time it was a plan to design a "true value chain" improving on-farm productivity, processing efficiency and delivering quality products to meet customer demand.

It was an "end-to-end" programme covering all facets of the value chain, starting with understanding existing and future customer requirements and distilling back to every part of the value chain including market research, product development and on farm nutrition.

The PGP funding was introduced in the 2009 Budget to provide funding for growth and innovation in the agricultural sector on a dollar-for dollar basis.
