The Marine Sector remains a significant employer for Waitakere, with local boat builders having a world renowned reputation for innovation and quality craftsmanship.
This is supported by a cluster of marine related businesses and suppliers resulting in Waitakere being well placed to be the centre of future sector growth in New Zealand.
Recognising this need for dedicated marine infrastructure and also the need for a long term home for the sector, Waitakere City Council along with the Marine Industry Association were instrumental in securing a significant parcel of land on the Hobsonville Peninsula for the development of a Marine Industry Precinct, following the decision by the Government to decommission the Hobsonville Airforce Base.
Hobsonville Peninsula was chosen because of the unique ability to secure a large parcel of greenfields land in close proximity to a deep water channel, which would provide a suitable environment for the long term building and refitting of superyachts in New Zealand.
The development is now entering it’s final consenting phase with “Yard 37 – New Zealand’s Superyacht Precinct” launched to the NZ Marine industry in August 2009. Full details of this development can be found at www.yard37.co.nz
