A shift to Waitakere is has paid dividends for the super yacht builder, Yachting Developments.
After outgrowing its premises on the North Shore after 15 years, Yachting Developments relocated to Hobsonville.
Director Ian Cook says, "Moving to Waitakere was not a decision we made lightly, but where we were before we were split over two factories, whereas here it's good because we're under one roof and we've got a lot more space to grow. Up until now we've had up to two projects on the go at a time and now we're going to be able to do more."
All of Yachting Development's boats are exported, predominantly to the United States and Europe, Mr Cook says."Globally the whole business is really strong, and there's probably only half a dozen companies doing what we're doing in the world".
Currently the team is working on a 120ft sailing boat which is due to be launched in November. This will be the largest composite sloop ever built in New Zealand. The company has 90 staff currently and is looking to hire another 10 or 20 - but it's not easy finding the right people in a tight employment environment, says Mr Cook.
