We aren't embarrassed to admit we're star struck by South Pacific Pictures. They make classic Kiwi shows like : Outrageous Fortune, NZ Got Talent and Shortland Street, and the films Whale Rider and Sione's Wedding.
So, just how does South Pacific Pictures make shows that are so consistently popular? The key to good TV and movies says their chief executive John Barnett is making shows which will have an audience.
"Take Whale Rider or Sione's Wedding," he says, "we ask, are they going to work in New Zealand and we ask ourselves are the shows going to have any similarities with other cultures or people around the world and will the relationships make sense?"
Another success factor for South Pacific Pictures is having people, including investors, who realise the potential of their projects.Today, the film company contracts 400 staff and during busy periods will have over 900 people working on their projects.
Local fans won't be surprised to hear that Outrageous Fortune is rated in the top 25 shows on air in Australia.
